West Chester Stops James Madison, 39-7

Box Score

HARRISONBURG, Va.
- Cheryl Johnson tied a school record with five trys Saturday morning as visiting West Chester cruised to a 39-7 victory over host James Madison in a women's rugby match.

West Chester (2-0) has now outscored its opponents 100-7 in its first two contests while Johnson has recorded nine trys and 45 points in those two games.

"Obviously, Cheryl played a great game," head coach Tony DeRemer said. "But, our backline has done an excellent job passing her the ball and leading her into space. This was a team effort and a team win."

Johnson scored trys in the eighth, 14th and 25th minutes to put West Chester comfortably out in front. From there, the Golden Rams relied on their defense to keep JMU at bay.

"We really wanted to put up another goose-egg on defense," DeRemer remarked. "But, I am proud of our defensive effort. Defensively, you try to starve the other team of possessions. We have done a good job of keeping the ball away from the other team, so we don't have to play defense too much."

Anna McGlade and Amy Noles scored West Chester's other trys on the morning.

"McGlade has been playing just great rugby since taking over the flyhalf position," DeRemer commented.
