WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Alexandra Lennon scored 20 points, grabbed seven rebounds and recorded four blocked shots to lead host West Chester to a 90-72 victory over visiting West Virginia Wesleyan on the first day of the 27th annual Carol Eckman Classic inside Hollinger Field House.
West Chester (1-0) opened its season with an impressive showing, shooting 48.6 percent from the field and outrebounding its opponent by 10 in the win. Lennon was 8-for-10 from the field and 4 of 6 from the free throw line in just 20 minutes of action Saturday. Her four blocked shots moved her to within six of the school’s all-time record of 212, set by Gina Tophoney.
The Golden Rams fell behind on the first basket of the game, but ran out to a 10-point lead over the next five minutes and never trailed after that. West Chester’s led by as many as 29 on two separate occasions in the second half. West Virginia Wesleyan (0-2) finished up the game on a 15-6 run to cut into the deficit.
Freshman Dallas Ely poured in 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds in her collegiate debut. Her and classmate Jasmen Clark were the two freshmen in head coach Deirdre Kane’s starting lineup. Clark scored seven points and led the Rams with five assists. Junior Brittany Powell knocked down 11 points off the bench.
Kane played 11 players in the season opener.
West Chester takes on Philadelphia University Sunday at 3 p.m. in the final game of the round-robin Carol Eckman Classic. PhilaU was a winner over Mercy College in the first game at Hollinger on Saturday. University of Sciences will play West Virginia Wesleyan tomorrow at 1 p.m. in the other game.
