WEST CHESTER, Pa. - Alexandra Lennon scored 22 points and broke the school’s carer blocked-shot record. However, it was not enough as Stephanie Michael (21 points) and visiting California (Pa.) took down host West Chester inside Hollinger Field House, 78-66 in a PSAC women’s basketball contest on Saturday afternoon.
West Chester (3-1, 0-1 PSAC) suffered its first loss of the season, ending a modest three-game winning streak to open up the campaign. Cal (4-0, 1-0), who was among others receiving votes in the latest WBCA coaches’ poll, remains undefeated on the season.
After West Chester went up 7-6 in the first couple minutes of the game, Cal regained the advantage and held it the rest of the afternoon. Cal dominated the first half, putting up 44 points and racing out to a 44-28 lead at the break.
Lennon recorded her 213th career block in the first two minutes of the game, moving her past Gina Tophoney (1995-99) and into first place on the all-time list. She finished the game with four blocks, upping her career total to 216.
West Chester eventually narrowed a 21-point deficit to 14 during the second half. But every time the Golden Rams would make a run and get within striking distance, the Vulcans would answer with a big shot.
Cal’s Stephanie Michael and Ashley Hines, 21 and 18 points respectively, seemed to be too much.
Lennon added nine rebounds to her 22 points and four blocks. Jasmen Clark notched 14 points and three assists in the loss. Ambreelinne Ortman scored nine points and grabbed six rebounds while Brittany Sicinski added nine points and three steals off the bench.
West Chester’s will be in action again Sunday afternoon at Hollinger Field House against No. 19 Indiana (Pa.). Cal travels to Cheyney on Sunday afternoon.
