WEST CHESTER, Pa. - Alexandra Lennon led all scorers with 21 points as West Chester University’s women’s basketball team defeated visiting Kutztown University, 66-53, at Hollinger Field House Wednesday evening.
West Chester (16-5, 12-5 PSAC) led wire-to-wire and played both tough defense and efficient offense all night long. With the win, West Chester remains just one game behind leader Bloomsburg in the PSAC East, who defeated Shippensburg, 72-63. Kutztown (6-17, 4-13 PSAC) fell behind 10-0 in the early going and could never recover.
West Chester clinched a playoff spot with the win Wednesday evening. The Golden Rams currently sit in second place.
The Golden Rams got out to a blazing start fueled by Lennon, who scored the games first 10 points. The Golden Bears settled down, however, and closed the gap and remained in the contest for the duration. Both teams struggled from the field with the Golden Bears shooting 23.5 percent from the field and 28.6 percent from behind the 3-point arc. West Chester did not better them by much, shooting 29.3 percent from the field and 37.5 percent from behind the 3-point line. The defenses for both teams kept the normally high octane offenses in check.
The second half is where West Chester began to pull away with a game changing 13-3 run by the Golden Rams. Guard Allison Hostetter played an incredible all-around game during the stretch with jaw-dropping assists to Lennon and Ambreelinne Ortman, and crucial steals to stifle Kutztown during this crucial run. Hostetter finished with six assists to go with her 10 points. The Golden Bears could not regain momentum until late in the game, finishing with a 10-2 run. It was too late for the visitors, however.
Advia Campbell led the scoring for Kutztown and recorded a double-double in the process, finishing with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Avery Hodgson also finished in double digits for the Golden Bears with 12 points.
Lennon finished with nine rebounds to lead the Golden Rams. Hostetter was the other player to finish with double-digit scoring, contributing 10 points to the home team. Seven others recorded points for West Chester. The Golden Rams defense caused a game-high 30 turnovers and seven blocked shots. This led to 29 points off of turnovers.
West Chester will be in action this Saturday, visiting league-leading Bloomsburg in what is billed as crucial to both team’s regular-season division title hopes. Tip-off is at 1:00 p.m.
