Opportunistic Golden Rams Scratch Out Win Against St. Joseph’s (Ind.), 2-1

Box Score

LAKE SUMTER, Fla. – Unearned runs in the third and fourth proved to be all West Chester needed as the Golden Rams remained perfect on the season with a 2-1 victory over Saint Joseph’s (Ind.) Saturday afternoon during their spring break trip to Florida.

Mike Raimo was hit by a pitch to lead off the top of the third inning. He would later come around to score on an error by Saint Joseph’s pitcher to give West Chester (4-0) a 1-0 lead. SJC (1-12) tied the contest in their half of the inning on a wild pitch with two outs.

However, West Chester came right back in the top of the fourth to score the eventual game-winning run when Josh Heyne singled and later scored on an error by the first baseman.

Fred Breidenbach (2-0) started and threw six solid innings, yielding one run on four hits while walking three and striking out three. Dave Stieg (1) tossed the final three innings of hitless, shutout ball to secure the win. Stieg struck out three, hit two batters, but did not walk anybody.

Joe Wendle was 2-for-4 with a double at the plate for the Golden Rams. West Chester collected five hits as compared to Saint Joseph’s four. SJC committed five errors in the ballgame.

West Chester takes on Minnesota-Duluth in a doubleheader beginning at 10 a.m.
