No. 7 West Chester Comes Up Short At Bloomsburg In OT, 14-13

Box Score

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Bloomsburg’s Samantha King scored the game-winning goal in overtime to lift Bloomsburg to a 14-13 win over seventh-ranked West Chester in a PSAC women’s lacrosse match Sunday afternoon at Sports Stadium.

The win was the first for Bloomsburg (4-2, 2-0 PSAC) over the Golden Rams since 2003 and snapped a 15-game losing streak.

The loss for West Chester (4-1, 2-1) also snapped the Golden Rams 72-game regular season PSAC winning streak. It was the school's first conference loss in the regular season since the 2006 season.

In the sudden victory overtime, West Chester won the draw control. After working the ball around the outside, Bloomsburg forced a turnover and picked up the ground ball to give the Huskies possession. The hosts then moved the ball down field where they were awarded a free position shot. King’s shot beat WCU goalkeeper Jess Henderson on the lower left side to give the Huskies the win.

West Chester, which trailed 7-3 late in the first half, rallied in the final minutes, scoring the final four goals of the frame to knot the game at 7-7 at the break.

West Chester made it six straight goals when Erin Oczkowski scored the first two of the second half to give the Rams a 9-7 lead. However, the Huskies rallied with Sam Mazzie scoring two goals in less than a minute to tie the game at 9-9.

After a goal from WCU's Brittany Long put the Golden Rams back on top, Falk scored for the Huskies with 15:51 to play to tie the score for the third time. Ashley Bossert then put Bloomsburg back on top with a goal from Mazzie.

West Chester tied the score at 11-all with Tori Dugan scoring with 11:47 to play, before Canavana answered with 8:13 to play, putting the Huskies on top 12-11. WCU’s Nicole Pyle netted the game-tying goal with 54 seconds left in regulation sending the game into overtime.

In the first of the two, three-minute OT sessions, West Chester struck first with Jacki Patterson scoring off a Dugan assist. Falk answered for the Huskies just 15 seconds later to tie the score at 13-13. It would stay that way through the remainder of the first, three-minute session and the second, three-minute period forcing the sudden victory and setting up King's game-winning goal.

Oczkowski finished with five points on the afternoon, scoring four times and picking up one assist. Dugan also posted five points on the strength of two goals and three assists. Jess Henderson (4-1) made 13 saves in the cage for West Chester.
