PRINCETON, N.J. - West Chester University's women's rugby squad earned a 10-10 tie with Princeton in its 2012-13 season opener Saturday morning.
Princeton tied things up in the 66th minute when All-American 8-man, Dorothy Mittow, scored an unconverted try for the Tigers. Up to that point, West Chester's defense had done a nice job of containing Princeton's All-American. Head coach Tony DeRemer lauded his team's defensive effort against the Tigers on Saturday.
"They really shut (Mittow) down," DeRemer said. "That was our goal going into the match, and I think they did a nice job with that game plan."
Princeton struck first in the 10th minute of the match on an unconverted try. However, West Chester answered back when Jackie Sacco scored in the 21st minute. Eight minutes later, Cheryl Johnson scooped up a turnover by Princeton and raced 70 meters for the go-ahead try that put the Golden Rams on top, 10-5 entering halftime.
"That breakaway really showcased (Johnson's) speed," DeRemer commented.
West Chester opens its home slate next Saturday with an 11 a.m. match against James Madison University on the rugby pitch. That match will be one of just two opportunities for West Chester's faithful to catch the Rams at home in the fall. West Chester plays its only other home match of the fall on Oct. 13 against University of Pittsburgh.
