West Chester Women Cannot Overcome Turnovers In 75-55 Setback To Shippensburg

Box Score

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Turnovers and red-hot outside shooting led host Shippensburg University to a, 75-55, victory over visiting West Chester in a PSAC East women’s basketball contest inside Heigis Fieldhouse Wednesday afternoon.

West Chester (9-7, 6-6 PSAC) has now lost three of its last four while Shippensburg (11-6, 7-5) has now won three of four to move past the Golden Rams in the league standings.

Shippensburg was lights out on its home floor, shooting 51 percent (25-for-49), including 7-for-14 from beyond the 3-point arc. The Raiders ended a personal eight-game losing streak to the Golden Rams with its win Wednesday. It marked the first time since 2008 that Shippensburg defeated West Chester and the first time since the Raiders jumped over to the Eastern Division.

The Golden Rams, who led the PSAC in 3-point shooting entering the tilt, were a lowly 5 of 20 from downtown and connected on just 22 of 62 from the floor all night. West Chester committed 31 turnovers, which Shippensburg converted into 28 points at the other end of the floor.

West Chester held a double-digit lead for much of the first half, until Shippensburg went on a 13-0 run with under seven minutes remaining to take a 25-24 lead. A 3-pointer from Jasmen Clark with 3:12 remaining ended the run for the Raiders. However, the hosts closed the half on a 6-2 spurt that gave them a 33-29 advantage at the break. A 7-2 run by the Raiders to open the second half eventually pushed the lead to nine (40-31) with 17 minutes left.

Paige Elliott led the Rams with 11 points on the night. It was her second straight game in double figures. Meghan Kerrigan led West Chester with seven points at halftime while Alexandra Lennon blocked three shots in the first 20 minutes. Kendall Benovy paced the visitors with a season-high nine rebounds.

Shippensburg’s Dana Wert scored 14 of her 21 points in the first half, surpassing 1,000 points in her career in the process. Sarah Strybuc also netted 21 for the Raiders.

West Chester hits the road again on Saturday when the Golden Rams travel to Bloomsburg for a 1 p.m. tipoff.
