LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – West Chester University Jr., QB
Sean McCartney was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) offensive player of the week it was announced by that organization Sunday afternoon.
Â
McCartney led the Golden Rams (6-0, 3-0 PSAC East) to a second-half comeback and a 34-20 victory over East Stroudsburg on Homecoming Weekend Saturday afternoon. The fifth-year junior signal-caller threw three touchdown passes after halftime and accounted for all four WCU scores in the win. He finished 25-for-39 for 275 yards and the three TDs against just one interception.
Â
McCartney scored on a naked bootleg in the first quarter to give Wes Chester a 7-0 lead early. However, after the Golden Rams fell behind 20-10 at the half, "Red" threw touchdown passes to Shannon Mayer, Jim Hurley and Shawn Driggins to keep West Chester undefeated on the season and in a tie for first place atop the Eastern Division standings.
Â
The Doylestown, Pa., native went 15-for-21 for 169 yards and the three TDs after the break to spark the comeback. He completed his 25 passes to nine different receivers, and his three TD passes were to receivers who hauled in their first TD catches in their career. Along the way, West Chester outgained East Stroudsburg 307-83 in the second half.
Â
McCartney is the third West Chester player, and second offensive representative, to be honored in the conference weekly honors. Sr., RB Rondell White was the PSAC East offensive player of the week after week one's win over New Haven. Jr., LB Ronell Williams was named PSAC East defensive player of the week after the Golden Rams' win over Kutztown in week four on Sept. 29.
Â
West Chester, ranked 17th in last week's American Football Coaches' Association (AFCA) national poll and 19th in the D2Football.com media poll, travels to newly minted PSAC East foe Lock Haven next Saturday for a 12 p.m. kickoff.
