Dallas Ely scored a career-high 23 points, and
Jasmen Clark and
Kendall Benovy each added 12, as visiting West Chester topped host Holy Family, 65-57, Tuesday evening in a non-league women’s basketball contest.
West Chester (4-2) has now won three of its last four with the win over Holy Family (2-3). The Tigers were among others receiving votes in the latest Top 25 coaches’ poll.
Benovy posted all 12 of her points in the first half as the Golden Rams raced out to a 35-28 lead at the break. Holy Family scored the final five points of the half, after trailing by 12 with 43 seconds left.
The Golden Rams shot 15-of-33, including 4 of 11 from 3-point range in the first 20 minutes. Two minutes into the contest, West Chester took an 8-5 lead on a three-ball from Benovy, and the visitors never trailed again.
Holy Family got to within five points with three minutes to play in the game on a pair of free throws from Erin Fenningham. However, that was as close as the hosts could get in the second half, after falling behind by as many as 12 points.
The Rams made just 6 of their final 12 free throw attempts over the final 90 seconds. However, Holy Family missed fired on four of its last six shots from the field and could not climb back into the game.
The difference was on defense where West Chester harassed Holy Family into 23 turnovers while recording 13 steals. Clark registered six steals and added five assists to her 12 points on the night.
Holy Family was led by Carolyne Heston’s 13 points and 11 rebounds. Nine of her 13 came before halftime. Fenningham and Mary Ellen McCollum each posted 10 points.
West Chester will be back in action the Wednesday after Thanksgiving when the Golden Rams travel to Millersville for a 6 p.m. clash with the Marauders.
