WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Junior right-hander Joe Gunkel tossed a complete-game shutout in the opener of a non-league baseball doubleheader, leading host West Chester to a 2-0 win over visiting University of the Sciences Sunday. USciences won game two, 6-0.
West Chester (2-4-1) got another stellar pitching performance from its ace on a Saturday afternoon made for baseball. Gunkel tied a career-high with nine strikeouts in seven innings of work. He allowed eight runs and did not walk a batter.
A two-run second inning was all Gunkel (2-1) needed Sunday. Nick Bonadies knocked in a run with a single and later scored himself to stake West Chester to its 2-0 lead. Five different Golden Rams registered a hit in the game. Kyle O’Brien (0-1) was the hard-luck loser for the Devils (4-5) in the opener. He allowed two runs, only one of which was earned, on five hits. He walked one and struck out two.
In the nightcap, USciences blew open a scoreless pitcher’s duel with five runs in the fifth, and then tacked on one more in the seventh to come away with the split. Matt McAllister (0-1) threw 1.1 innings in relief for West Chester, surrendering five runs on six hits while walking one. He could not get out of the fifth inning.
Kyle Weary came on in relief and went the last 2.2 innings, allowing just one unearned run without yielding a hit. He walked three and struck out two. Fred Breidenbach started game two and threw three scoreless innings, giving up two hits, walking one and striking out two.
The Devils’ Jame Ianni (1-0) tossed five scoreless innings in relief to pick up the win. He allowed two hits, walked three and struck out two. Pablo Matos started and went the first two innings. He did not allow a hit or a run. He walked one and struck out one.
West Chester scheduled a doubleheader make-up with College of Saint Rose for Tuesday, March 12 at 12 noon.
