ANNAPOLIS, Md. - West Chester women's rugby dropped a Mason-Dixon conference match Thursday evening, 22-12.
West Chester (6-2-1) saw its three-game winning streak on the season come to a close just two days before the inaugural Mason-Dixon Tournament opens on Saturday. The Golden Rams will play a yet-to-be-determined opponent at home on Saturday in the quarterfinals.
Cheryl Johnson and Anna Bocchino each had a try for West Chester. Johnson's try, a 50-meter run, in the 17th minute put West Chester in front 7-5, following Katie Walston's conversion. However, the Midshipmen scored six minutes later to go back in front, 12-7. Navy would score one more time before the half to take a 17-7 advantage into the break.
Bocchino added a try in the 42nd minute to pull West Chester within five, 17-12. But, Navy put the match away in the 53rd minute with another try.
"I was very encouraged with the way our team played today," WCU head coach Tony DeRemer said. "Navy is always one of the top programs in the country, and we played them evenly in many aspects of the game.
"However, we just committed too many penalties. The wind played a huge factor in the game, and we had the wind in the second half. But, we were unable to take advantage. Mental errors and penalties against a team of Navy's caliber will cost you the match every time."
