CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - West Chester jumped out to a 19-0 lead early in the first half and then hung on for a 29-22 victory over James Madison in the semifinals of the inaugural Mason-Dixon Tournament Saturday morning at the University of Virginia.
West Chester (8-2-1) advances to the championship game where the Golden Rams will meet Navy at noon for the conference title. A win tomorrow would give West Chester the Mason-Dixon championship and an automatic bid to the USA Rugby Championships next month.A loss, and the Rams would have to hope for an at-large bid.
Cheryl Johnson scored in the third minute, and Anna Bocchino followed with a try in the 13th minute. Katie Walston converted both to give West Chester a 14-0 lead. Jackie Sacco added a try in the 17th minute to stretch the lead to 19-0.
JMU scored three trys in the second half. However, Kayla Gatto went over the try line in the 56th minute and Nicole Benedetti found pay dirt in the 75th minute to keep James Madison at bay.
