SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Shippensburg’s Cal Hogan hit a walk-off single to center field in the 10th inning of game one to secure a 5-4 victory while the host Raiders went on to take game two of its PSAC East doubleheader against visiting West Chester, 5-2, at Fairchild Field Sunday afternoon.
West Chester (18-16-1, 9-7 PSAC East) dropped three of four games to Shippensburg (22-17, 9-11), but still remains in third place in the league standings.
The Golden Rams scored twice in the top of the seventh inning of game one to knot the score at 3-3 and send the game into extra innings. However, the Raiders were able to rally and win the game in the 10th. Mike Raimo hit a sacrifice fly, and Justin Lamborn was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded as the Rams rallied to tie the game.
Kyle Weary (3-1) suffered his first loss of the season, going 3.2 innings in relief of starter Matt McAllister. Weary allowed two runs on five hits, walked four and struck out two. McAllister started the game and lasted 5.2 innings. He struggled through the first two frames, surrendering three runs on five hits. However, head coach Jad Prachniak stayed with him, and McAllister settled down, not allowing another run and scattering just three more hits over the next 3.2 innings.
Five different Golden Rams collected a hit in game one. Raimo finished with a pair of RBI from his leadoff spot. Lamborn and Tyler Coleman had the other two RBI.
Game two started out promising for West Chester. Jack Provine and Lamborn were each hit by a pitch in back-to-back plate appearances. Justin Roman then singled home both of them to give West Chester a 2-0 lead. For Provine, it was the 19th time this season that he has been hit by a pitch and the 42nd time in his career. He holds the single-season school record for being hit the most while tying the all-time mark set by Matt Cotellese from 2005-09. His 19 hit by pitches is tied for the sixth most in NCAA Division II this spring.
Shippensburg tied the game with a two-spot in the fifth and added three more in the sixth to pull away with a 5-2 win. Conor Kerins (2-4) took the loss on the hill for West Chester. He lasted 5.1 innings and gave up five runs on five hits while walking four and striking out three.
Roman finished 2-for-3 with those two RBI. Raimo, Chris Pula and Coleman were the only other three to muster a hit in game two.
West Chester travels to Wilmington (Del.) for a non-league doubleheader on Tuesday.
