WEST CHESTER, Pa. - Millersville's Tim Mayza two-hit West Chester in the opener, and Tad Barton kept the Golden Rams in check in the nightcap as No. 18/28 Millersville swept a doubleheader from host West Chester by scores of 9-0 and 8-4 Friday afternoon at Serpico Stadium.
West Chester (18-20-1, 9-9 PSAC East) remains in fourth place in the Eastern Division standings of the PSAC while Millersville (32-12, 14-4) took over sole possession of first place with East Stroudsburg's sweep over Kutztown on Friday.
With well over two dozen pro scouts watching game one, West Chester ace Joe Gunkel took to the mound opposite Millersville ace Tim Mayza. On this day, it was Mayza (9-2) who quieted the Golden Rams' bats with a two-hit shutout. He allowed a pair of hits to Chris Pula, but West Chester could not get a run across on him all day. Gunkel (5-4) lasted 5.1 innings, giving up all nine runs, only five of which were earned, on seven hits. He walked four and struck out seven.
Millersville plated a pair of runs in the third and fifth, before blowing open the game with a five-run sixth.
In the nightcap, Barton (7-2) went six innings, yielding four runs on five hits, striking out six without walking a batter. Pula had the big blow for West Chester - a three-run double in the sixth that helped the hosts cut an eight-run deficit in half.
West Chester starter Fred Breidenbach (3-3) took the loss on the hill. He threw five innings, surrendering eight runs, only five earned, on nine hits while walking two and striking out four.
West Chester and Millersville go back at it on Saturday in Millersville for another PSAC East doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
