SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Tori Dugan and Jamie Dolan each tallied four goals to lead second-ranked West Chester University to a 17-12 PSAC women’s lacrosse victory over host Shippensburg Tuesday afternoon.
West Chester (9-0, 6-0 PSAC) remains unbeaten on the year and atop the conference standings with the win. But, it was not without its scary moments for the favored Golden Rams.
Shippensburg (4-8, 2-4) sat tied at 4-4 with nine minutes to go in the opening half before the visitors reeled off an 8-1 run to lead 12-5 with 25 minutes to play. The Raiders kept the Golden Rams off the scoreboard for 18 minutes and used a 6-0 run to make the score 12-11 with 11:15 to go. However, WCU proved to be too much down the stretch, scoring five of the final six tallies.
Dugan scored twice, sandwiched around a marker by Dolan, over a three minute span in the final 10 minutes of the game to help West Chester pull away. Dugan’s final tally of the afternoon came while a man up. Hannah Cowan and Nicole Pyle scored back-to-back with just over one minute left to finish off the Rams’ five-goal run.
Dolan scored twice in the first half to fuel West Chester’s 8-1 run. The Golden Rams showed their depth as seven different goal scorers were responsible for the spurt that put the visitors on top, 10-4.
Jess Henderson (9-0) made four saves to pick up the win in the cage. Shippensburg’s Ally Frymoyer stopped 14 shots in the loss.
Shippensburg’s 12 goals marked the first time all season that West Chester allowed an opponent to reach double figures in a game. The five-goal differential was also the closest margin of victory for the Golden Rams all season.
West Chester hosts Slippery Rock on Saturday at Vonnie Gros Field on Senior Day.
