TOWSON, Md. – West Chester Gymnastics stepped up in competition Saturday and proved to be a team truly on the rise, finishing second in its quad meet, inside the newly christened SECU Arena.
West Chester moved to 5-1 in 2014 registering a score of 188.975, to finish in second place, trailing only host Towson, who won the competition with a score of 191.9 in the first gymnastics meet held in SECU Arena. Southern Connecticut State was third with a 187.1, and Centenary College placed fourth with a score of 186.375.
"It was the first time they had to face a lot of pressure this year," a pleased coach Barb Cordova said. "They really handled it well."

Selena Swanger hit an amazing vault to score a 9.65, which was good for second place.
Emily Siegel captured the title on the uneven parallel bars with a score of 9.75. Teammate Meghan Brannon's score of 9.725 tied for second.
Once again the Golden Rams top four on the beam all recorded scores of 9.5 or better with Siegel leading the way with a 9.675 and finishing in a tie for sixth,
Alyssa Hult was 10th with a 9.6,
Melissa Prisco and
Cecelia Lorenzen, tied for 13th at 9.5.
Majesta Valentine scored a 9.775 on the floor to finish in a tie for third.
Stephanie Plaugher (9.65) was 11th while
Lindsay Knapp's 9.625 placed her 14th, and Siegel was 18th with her 9.525.
"Emily Siegel had an outstanding meet," Cordova said. "She scored well in all three events in which she competed."
Valentine recorded a personal best of 37.725 in the all-around competition and finished in fourth place.
West Chester is next in action on Saturday at the Ken Anderson Invitational in Philadelphia hosted by Temple University. That invitational includes Ursinus College and Cornell University. The meet is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
