West Chester Baseball Opens with 9-1 Win Over Post

COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. – Matt Petrizzi went 3-4 with two RBI, Chris Pula and Rob Spekhardt also knocked in a pair of runs and West Chester University baseball scored four runs in the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie en route to a season opening 9-1 victory over Post University Saturday afternoon at Shepherd Stadium

West Chester (1-0) used only two pitchers to open the season with a win. So. Ron Scull came in with the score tied, to start the sixth, and hurled the final four innings surrendering only an eighth inning double to pick up the victory. Scull retired the first eight Eagles he faced, recorded four strikeouts and did not issue a free pass.

Sr. Fred Breidenbach pitched the first five innings giving up only a single run, on a solo home run in with two outs in the first. Breidenbach exited with the game knotted at 1-1, giving up only two hits, with five strikeouts, but he did walk five.

In the decisive bottom of the sixth, the Golden Rams scored four times with two outs to break the 1-1- tie.  Luke Mogle started the rally with a one out single, he was replaced by pinch runner Mike Gannon, after a fly out to right, Sr. catcher Kyle Frazier singled to keep the inning alive and bring up the top of the order. Leadoff  hitter, Mike Raimo doubled to score Gannon and break the tie, shortstop Matt Petrizzi followed with a two run single to give West Chester a 4-1 lead, and third baseman Chris Pula's RBI double made it 5-1.

The Golden Rams scored four more times in the seventh Tyler Coleman and Robert Knox opened the inning with singles Rob Spekhardt singled in a run, Frazier picked up and RBI with a sacrifice, and after Petrizzi singled for his third hit of the game, Pula brought in another run with a sacrifice fly to end the scoring.

Post (0-1) opened the scoring on a two out solo home run from second baseman Mike Shada in the top of the first. The Golden Rams tied the game in the fourth on an RBI groundout by Spekhardt plating Justin Roman who single to lead off the inning with West Chester's first hit of the game.

The Golden Rams take on PSAC West foe Mercyhurst at 7 p.m. in the second game of the day.
