WEST CHESTER, Pa. - Mercyhurst's Regan Kaestner scored a man-up goal with 19 seconds remaining in overtime, and Lakers' goalkeeper Rebecca Muscella stopped a shot at the buzzer, to lift visiting Mercyhurst to an 11-10 victory over host West Chester in a PSAC women's lacrosse battle at rain-soaked Vonnie Gros Field Saturday.
West Chester (5-2, 2-2 PSAC) fell at home to Mercyhurst (7-1, 3-0) for the first time in eight games, ending a personal four-game winning streak over the Lakers that dated back to 2009.
The Golden Rams had one more opportunity following Kaestner's go-ahead goal with 19 ticks left in overtime. Mercyhurst won the ensuing draw control and called timeout with 11 seconds left. The Lakers turned the ball over on an errant pass right in front of their own cage, and West Chester attacker Hannah Cowan picked up the loose ball and fired on goal. Muscella made the save as the horn sounded.
Muscella also came up with a huge save as time expired in regulation and the game knotted at 9-apiece. She stopped Erin Eckert's free position attempt at the buzzer to extend the game into the extra session.
Cowan finished with six goals while Dina Cifelli posted seven points (1G, 6A). Sarah Dennison scored twice, and Kelsey Gumbert had the only other tally.
Jess Henderson (5-2) made four saves in the cage for West Chester. Muscella stopped 12 shots in all to get the win.
West Chester will return home on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. draw with PSAC rival Millersville.
