Box Score 2 WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Mike Raimo slid home with the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning to complete a doubleheader sweep for West Chester, 2-1, over visiting Shippensburg on Friday afternoon at Serpico Stadium.
West Chester (22-12, 14-8 PSAC East) held on for a 7-6 win in the opener, ending a seventh-inning rally from Shippensburg (23-15, 10-12), before the Raiders could push across the tying run.
Raimo was hit by a pitch on a 1-2 count with one out in the eighth to start the Golden Rams' decisive rally. Justin Roman followed with a single up the middle. Raimo raced around to third. Shippensburg head coach Matt Jones replaced his left fielder with an infielder, playing three infielders on the left side. He then walked WCU's Matt Petrizzi intentionally to load the bases.
With the infield drawn in, Tyler Coleman hit a ball up the middle that Shippensburg's shortstop dove and stopped. However, his throw home was high and not in time as Raimo slid home with the winning run.
Senior right-handed pitcher, Fred Breidenbach (3-5) went the distance for the win on the hill. He yielded just one unearned run on six hits over eight innings. He walked one and struck out seven. His counterpart, righty Pat Kregeloh (3-3) was equally impressive for the Raiders. He surrendered two runs, only one of them earned, on three hits. He walked four and struck out 11.
Roman registered two of West Chester's three hits in the nightcap, going 2-for-4 on the day.
In the opener, a five-run third for the Golden Rams lifted them to a 7-2 lead. From there, West Chester survived a late rally from Shippensburg to hang on. The Raiders scored once in the fifth and sixth, before plating two more in the seventh to pull within one. That was as close as they could get.
Matt McAllister (3-2) pitched 6.2 innings, yielding five earned runs on 11 hits. He walked four and struck out three. Ron Scull (2) came on for the last out to pick up the save.
Kyle Frazier had a two-run single in the second, and Luke Mogle did the same in the third. Raimo hit a run-scoring single in the third as well while Petrizzi scored on a wild pitch, and Mogle came around on a throwing error by the Raiders' catcher.
Marcus Shippey (2-4) suffered the loss on the mound for Shippensburg. He lasted 2.2 innings, giving up seven runs, six earned, on six hits. He walked four. Kyle McClintock and Josh Kutchey each tossed 1.2 innings.
Roman was 2-for-4 again in game one. He finished 4-for-8 on the day combined. Mogle and Rob Spekhardt each scored twice in the opener as well.
West Chester and Shippensburg will go at it once again on Saturday in Shippensburg to conclude the weekend doubleheader. That twinbill begins at 1 p.m.
