West Chester Splits Doubleheader With Mansfield

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Tyler Coleman was a combined 5-for-6 at the plate, and Matt McAllister threw a complete-game shutout in game one as host West Chester University split its PSAC East baseball doubleheader with visiting Mansfield Saturday afternoon at Serpico Stadium.
 
West Chester (13-9, 6-6 PSAC East) split its third doubleheader of the week to remain at .500 in league play while Mansfield (14-9, 2-6) picked up its second split of a conference twinbill this season as well. The Golden Rams took game one, 5-0, before the Mountaineers engineered a come-from-behind, 6-4 win in the nightcap.
 
McAllister was masterful in the opener, scattering six hits over seven innings while walking two and striking out five.
 
Matt Petrizzi hit a RBI single in the third, and Mike Raimo scored on an error later in the frame to put West Chester on top early, 2-0. The Golden Rams would tack on a run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Rob Knox. Rob Spekhardt then delivered the nail in the coffin with a bases-loaded, two-run single up the middle in the sixth to put the Rams up five.
 
Justin Roman went 2-for-3 with a double and a pair of runs scored. Brandon Miller and Dave Glueck each had a pair of hits to lead Mansfield.
 
In the nightcap, the Mountaineers scored four runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to erase a 3-0 lead en route to a 6-4 win.
 
West Chester opened its 3-0 lead when Mike Gannon scored on a balk, and Chris Pula plated Petrizzi with a RBI groundout, in the first inning. Knox then singled home Coleman in the second inning. Spekhardt had an RBI groundout of his own in the bottom of the sixth that made it 6-4. However, the Golden Rams went down quietly in the seventh.
 
Fred Breidenbach (1-4) lasted 5.1 innings in the second game, yielding five runs on eight hits. He walked two and struck out two. Kyle Weary came on and finished up, allowing one unearned run on a pair of hits.
 
Matt Engler (2-0) picked up the win for Mansfield. He threw four innings, allowing three runs on six hits. He walked four and struck out one. Jeremy Mapstone earned his sixth save of the year, throwing three innings and surrendering one run on three hits. He walked one and struck out two.
