Box Score NEW CASTLE, Del. – Wilmington (Del.) hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th inning, giving the hosts a 7-6 victory over visiting West Chester University, in a non-league baseball game Wednesday afternoon at Wilson Field.
Twentieth-ranked Wilmington (19-4-1) had an answer for every West Chester (14-11) rally Wednesday, before getting the game-winner in extra innings.
The Golden Rams jumped in front early with a run in the top of the first. The Wildcats answered that in the third. West Chester scored two in the top of the fourth just to see Wilmington tie it up in their at bats, and then WCU posted a three-spot in the sixth that the hosts answered as well.
Matt Lopes reached on an error to lead off the 10th inning for Wilmington. Brendan Fallers came on to run for Lopes and was sacrificed over to second. He was awarded third when Kyle Weary was called for a balk. Brody Tennant then hit a sacrifice fly to left that plated Fallers with the winning run.
Mike Raimo hit a two-out, two-run triple in the top of the sixth and later scored on a fielding error that helped West Chester take a 6-3 lead. Wilmington retaliated in their half of the frame when Tennant singled in a run, Frank Samluk was walked with the bases loaded and Sam Goines scored on a fielder's choice.
Luke Mogle and Bill Ford each registered RBI singles in the third that had put the Rams in front, 3-1, at the time. Tennant answered that with a two-run single the evened the score for the second time in the game.
Tyler Coleman singled home Raimo, who was hit by a pitch to lead off the game, in the first inning to give WCU its initial lead. Jon Castro's RBI single in the third knotted things at 1-1.
West Chester freshman Andrew Gernert made the start on the hill and lasted five innings. He allowed three runs on seven hits, walked one and struck out two. Scull started the sixth, but only retired one batter before yielding three runs on four hits, walking one and striking out one. Ryan Swearingen came on and got the Rams out of the inning. He pitched into the ninth, before giving way to Weary. Swearingen threw 2.2 scoreless innings, surrendering a pair of hits, walking one and striking out one. Weary (3-2) was the hard-luck loser, giving up one unearned run without giving up a hit in 1.2 innings of work. He also struck out a batter.
Seven different hurlers scattered nine hits over 10 innings for Wilmington. Peter Monahan (2-0) pitched the 10th to get credit for the win.
Coleman, Pula and Mogle each collected a pair of hits on the day. Roman, Coleman, Mogle and Ford each picked up a RBI to go along with Raimo's two-run triple.
West Chester returns to conference play on Friday with a doubleheader on the road at Lock Haven. That double dip begins at 1 p.m. Those two will go at it again on Saturday at Serpico Stadium for another PSAC East doubleheader.
