Aalea Ray (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) cored three trys, one penalty kick and converted five scores to finish with 28 points as West Chester's women's rugby team registered an easy 82-0 victory over James Madison University in the first round of the 2015 USA Women's Rugby Division I Tournament Saturday afternoon.
West Chester (10-2) advances to the quarterfinals on Sunday to play Virginia at noon, who defeated Virginia Tech, in the other first-round contest at Founders Field in Pittsburgh. The field is the home of the Pittsburgh Harlequins' men's team.
In addition to Ray's 28 points,
Nicole Benedetti (Levittown, Pa./Conwell-Egan Catholic) registered three trys for 15 points - all in the first half when West Chester built a 41-0 lead. Seven different Golden Rams recorded a try on Saturday. Benedetti posted her first try of the game on the team's first possession,
Katie Walston (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville) converted, and the Rams never looked back.
Mia Schweizerhof (Perkasie, Pa./Christopher Dock Mennonite) scored an unconverted try, and then Ray picked up the first of her three trys, converted by Walston, to give West Chester a 19-0 lead in the early stages of the game.
Anna Bocchino (Fort Washington, Pa./Gwynedd Mercy Academy) added a try of her own to put West Chester up, 24-0, before Benedetti sandwiched trys around another by Ray as the first half came to an end.
Suz Eitler (Avondale, Pa./Avon Grove) opened the second half with her first career try that Ray converted.
Adriana Zeiders (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) added an unconverted try next, before Ray booted a penalty kick thru the uprights to give West Chester a 56-0 advantage.
Benedetti now has 337 points - one behind Walston at 338 - in the race for the total career points lead. Benedetti passed the 330 mark with today's 15 points. Â
