Box Score WEST CHESTER, Pa. –
Hannah Cowan (Wilmington, Del./Ursuline Academy) and
Ashley Pyle (Springfield, Pa./Garnet Valle) each posted nine points to lead host and eighth-ranked West Chester to victory over visiting Millersville in the PSAC opener for both schools Tuesday afternoon at Vonnie Gros Field.
Â
West Chester (5-0, 1-0 PSAC) scored 14 unanswered goals en route to the 21-3 triumph over Millersville (4-2, 0-1). Cowan scored eight goals and added an assist while Pyle scored five goals and four assists to lead the charge.
Â
Cowan's goals were the most in a single game by a Golden Rams player since Jamie Dolan scored eight times against Queens (N.C.) in 2012. Cowan and Pyle's nine points were the most since
Dina Cifelli (Robbinsville, N.J./Notre Dame) posted 10 points against Kutztown her freshman year.
Â
Seven other players inked their names into the scoring column for the Rams Tuesday, including
Olivia Martin (Havertown, Pa./Haverford), who scored twice. Cifelli finished with four assists while
Erin Eckert (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) posted three.
Â
Pyle registered a natural hat trick with three consecutive goals early on in the game that helped West Chester build a 4-0 lead, before Millersville could get on the board.
Â
The Marauders actually won the draw control battle, 15-10. However, the Golden Rams continuously forced the visitors to turn the ball over in the midfield, and Millersville could not take advantage of the one area that they seemed to be winning. West Chester harassed Millersville into 31 turnovers for the game. As a result, the Marauders only got off eight shots in the game.
Â
WCU goalkeeper
Paige Mitros (Glen Mills, Pa./Garnet Valley) made three saves while her counterpart Bryana Weston-Wy made five.
Â
West Chester faces its toughest test on the young season Saturday on the road at Mercyhurst. That game time has been moved up to 11 a.m. in Erie, Pa.
