Flock Talk
After playing its first two "home" games inside the Schwartz Center at Widener University, the West Chester women's basketball team will make its return to Hollinger Field House for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) doubleheader this weekend. The Golden Rams head to Hollinger on Saturday with a 4-1 overall record (1-1 PSAC) and coming off a 74-67 victory at Holy Family University last Sunday. Despite being down for a majority of the game, West Chester used some late-second heroics from senior
Porscha Speller (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) to escape the Campus Center with the seven-point victory. With the score tied at 67-67 late, Speller took her team and the game into her own hands, as the talented senior closed out the contest on a 7-0 run on her own to wield her squad to a 74-67 come-from-behind victory on the road. Speller led the Golden Rams with 20 points in the win and flirted with a triple-double after adding nine rebounds and six assists in 37 minutes played. Fellow senior
Mia Hopkins (Pittston, Pa./Pittston) also had a huge game for West Chester against the Tigers, putting up 15 points and a monstrous 18 rebounds to record her fourth double-double in five games. Hopkins' 18 boards on Sunday were the most of any player in the PSAC this season and marked the most rebounds in a game by a West Chester women's basketball player since 2011.
Roster Check
Speller's 20.8 points per game are tops on the team and puts the lead guard at No. 3 in the PSAC through five games, while her .559 field goal percentage (38-of-68) is second overall in the league. She has scored at least 20 points in all but one game this season and the Lancaster native currently ranks second on the team with 5.6 rebounds/game, and her 3.8 assists/game lands her at No. 3 on the squad.
Following her league-best 18 rebounds against Holy Family, Hopkins paces West Chester and ranks second in the conference with 13.2 rebounds per contest. The Bloomsburg transfer's 5.0 helpers per outing are No. 3 in the conference thus far, while her 35.0 minutes per game are fourth in the PSAC though five games. Hopkins has scored in double figures in every game this season and she has notched at least 10 boards in all but one affair heading into Saturday's game against IUP.
Team Stats and All That
West Chester is scoring 89.0 points per game entering the weekend, giving the Golden Rams the No. 1 scoring offense in the PSAC and the fifth best across NCAA DII. Head Coach Kierra Wooden's squad also paces the conference with a .481 (169-of-351) shooting percentage (No. 10 nationally) and assists/game (21.80), while its 1.68 assist/turnover ratio puts the squad at No. 3 in the country and atop the conference rankings through five games. West Chester's 89 points/game versus its opponent's 72.4 points/game gives the Golden Rams the second best offense/defense margin in the PSAC at +16.6, trailing only Saturday's adversary IUP (+23.0) for the top spot in the league. West Chester has accounted for the top three highest-scoring games in the conference thus far this season, while its 66.1% shooting percentage in the huge 106-71 victory over Clarion earlier in the year marks the highest single-game field goal percentage of any team in the country.

Hawk Talk
Under the tutelage of Head Coach Tom McConnell, IUP (5-0) enters Saturday's game ranked No. 7 in the country and riding a five-game winning streak to start the 2017-18 campaign. Last time out, the Crimson Hawks defeated Bowie State 53-37 inside the A.C. Jordan Arena to improve to 5-0 on the year and 1-0 in road games. Megan Smith's 15 points led three Crimson Hawks in double figures, while Lauren Wolosik added 11 points and a team-high six assists with four rebounds in 38 minutes played. IUP held the Bulldogs to two single-digit scoring quarters in that game, while keeping the home team to just 14-of-50 (28%) shooting from the floor and an abysmal 1-of-17 (5.9%) clip from beyond the arc.
Roster Check
Smith paces the Crimson Hawk offense with 14.6 points per outing and her 93% shooting from the charity stripe puts the senior atop the conference leaderboard. Smith's six total blocks on the year are the most on IUP though five games, while her 5.8 assists per contest are second on coach McConnell's squad.
Handing out 6.0 helpers/game, Wolosik leads the PSAC in both total assists (36) and assists per outing. The redshirt junior has handed out at least four assists in each game this season, highlighted by a nine-assist performance in a win over Lock Haven start conference play. Wolosik also ranks second on the team in scoring at 12.6 points/game and her 3.0 steals/game are tied for second most in the league entering Saturday's game.
Team Stats and All That
Boasting one of the best defenses in the country, the Crimson Hawks' 48.2 scoring defense is the best in the PSAC thus far and puts IUP at No. 5 in NCAA DII. The Crimson Hawks pace the league with a 0.301 field goal percentage defense and +23 scoring margin, while their 0.187 three-point field percentage defense ranks atop the conference at fifth overall nationally. IUP currently boasts the highest rebounding margin (+6.0) in the league and its 64-board performance against West Virginia State in November is the most of any squad in the conference this season.
Coach Wooden on IUP
"IUP has a very stingy defense, but in addition to their defense, they are also a capable scoring team. Conversely, we have a talented offensive group with numerous scoring threats. If we are clicking on all cylinders offensively, I think we can compete with anyone. However, we cannot win this game with offense alone … we will have to hone in defensively to limit their offensive production if we want to compete. "
SCOUTING SETON HILL

Hill's Deal
Seton Hill will come to Hollinger on Sunday after battling East Stroudsburg on Saturday afternoon. Entering its game against the Warriors, the Griffins sit at 3-2 overall behind a 1-1 mark in conference play. Last time out, Seton Hill downed West Virginia State 88-74 on the road behind another solid performance from freshman standout Cheyenne Trest. A three-time PSAC West Freshman of the Week winner, Trest poured in a game-high 22 points on 7-10 shooting from the floor and handed out a team-best six assists in 29 minutes played. Alexandra Hay chipped 18 points and six boards in the win, while Hannah Laslo collected a team-high nine boards to go along with eight points and three assists against the Yellow Jackets.
Roster Check
Senior guard Jenna Kaufman's 15.6 points per game are the most of any player on the Griffins' roster, while her 8.6 boards/game puts her atop the team leaderboard and sixth in the PSAC. Starting in all five games, Kaufman has grabbed at least 10 boards in all but two games this season.
Trest has made quite a name for herself to start the season, becoming the first Seton Hill women's basketball player in history to win three weekly conference awards (3x Freshman of the Week) in a season. That stat is impressive enough, but the fact that Trest has broken the record in just three weeks makes the accomplishment even more phenomenal. Trest's 14.8 points per game puts the freshman at No. 2 on the Griffins through five games and she is currently leading the squad with 4.6 assists per outing entering Seton Hill's game versus East Stroudsburg.
Coach Wooden on Trest
"Cheyenne is special because she plays beyond her years. Watching her play, you would never assume that she is a freshman. She can score in a variety of ways – pushing in transition, knocking down the three and attacking the rim. In order to slow her down, we will need a full team effort … we have to limit her touches and be present on every catch - help defense must be present on her dribble drives."
Team Stats and All That
Connecting on 63-of-76 (83%) of its shots from the charity stripe, Seton Hill is the top foul shooting team in the conference and currently ranks sixth in the country. The Griffins are scoring 74.0 points while allowing 67.8 to give the Seton Hill a +6.2 scoring margin ahead of its game on Saturday.
Coach Wooden on Seton Hill
"I believe Seton Hill is a much better team than its record indicates. We are both offensive-minded teams that have capable scorers – the team that manages to string together the most defensive stops on Sunday will come out on top"
