WCU Men Finish Sixth At PSAC Championships; Justus Norman Field MVP

PSAC Indoor Track & Field Championships - Complete Results

EDINBORO, Pa. – Justus Norman (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) was named the Field MVP leading West Chester's men's team to a sixth place finish at the 2017 PSAC Indoor Track & Field Championships inside the Mike S. Zafirovski Dome Sunday afternoon.

West Chester placed sixth overall with a grand total of 66 points, marking the team's highest finish (6th) since 2015 and its most points (66) since 2007. Shippensburg took the team title with 143 points while Slippery Rock was second with 141.5 points. East Stroudsburg was third with 78, and Lock Haven fourth with 73.

" I thought the men's team did a great job of competing this weekend," WCU head coach Jason Kilgore stated. "They were able to score the most points that we've scored at the indoor PSAC championship and move up a place from last year to finish 6th. Justus Norman, DeShaun Pickett and Colin Vannicolo led the way for the men, each winning an event."

Norman placed second in the triple jump on Sunday with a leap of 47 feet, 11 ¾ inches, which was an NCAA provisional distance. That effort followed his PSAC title in the long jump on Saturday. His performance in those two jumping events handed him the Field MVP Award at this year's championships. He is the first West Chester male to earn Field MVP honors since Eric Broadbent in 2007.

"(Norman) has been building towards this all year," Kilgore said. "It's a tribute to his hard work that everything came together for him this weekend."

Kilgore went on to mention that "Norman earning field athlete of the meet was great. He had a great meet winning long jump and he certainly made the triple jump interesting on his last jump."

DeShaun Pickett (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Colin Vannicolo (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown) each brought home individual PSAC crowns on Sunday, running West Chester's total of individual conference championships to three for the two-day event. Both individuals were the favorites in their respective events heading into Sunday and the pair did not disappoint.

Pickett won the 60m dash with a time of 6.89 seconds, hitting an NCAA provisional time in the process, while Vannicolo won the Heptathlon with 4,979 points, which is easily a provisional qualifying amount. Pickett also finished fourth in the 200m, clocking a time of 21.91 seconds that was also a provisional time. Brady Thayer (Hanover, Pa./South Western) was fifth in the Heptathlon with 4,234 points as well.

Jim McDaid (Atlantic City, N.J./Mainline Regional) placed eighth in the 800m with a time of 1 minute, 57.72 seconds, before helping the 4x400m relay team finish seventh overall in 3:24.6. He teamed with Ghassan Dix (Upper Darby, Pa./Upper Darby), Shawn Young (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) and Vannicolo in that relay.

Bryce Sadler (Marietta, Pa./Donegal) finished sixth in the shot put, putting it 46-8¼.

Overall, "I thought the weekend went really well and I am really proud of this group of student athletes and our assistant coaches!"
