West Chester's Comeback Bid Falls Short, 14-13

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Senior Ashley Pyle (Springfield, Pa./Garnet Valley) produced a game-high five goals for the Golden Rams, but West Chester's second-half comeback fell short, 14-13 Saturday afternoon.

West Chester (4-1, 1-1 PSAC) fell behind early as Mercyhurst's (3-2, 2-1 PSAC) Carly Zimmerman picked up a ground ball to strike the first blow at 25:59. Senior Dina Cifelli (Robbinsville, N. J./Notre Dame) would return the score back to even at 21:48, 1-1. Pyle later would find the goal again, making it her ninth of the season and being assisted by Cifelli to regain the lead. Pyle has 13 goals for the season. A transition of lead changes, Mercyhurst would score twice before West Chester was forced to take a time out during 16:14 in the first period with the score being at 4-2. The Golden Rams found the goal twice before being over dominated in the first half,10-4.

During the opening of the second West Chester continued to trail. However, a goal by freshman Tatum Altman (North Brunswick, N. J./North Brunswick) would change the momentum. The Golden Rams struck four goals to close the lead to 11-9. Pyle alongside Sarah Gerbe (Furlong, Pa./Central Bucks West), Sami Barnett (Glendolen, Pa./Interboro) and Olivia Martin (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) would produce those goals.

The Lakers rattled off three goal as the Golden Rams attempted to regain the lead. A goal by Ali Donohue (Mullica Hill, N. J./Clearview Regional) which was assisted by Cifelli would close the lead to two as Pyle closed the lead down to one with 52 seconds left. However, Mercyhurst won the ensuing draw control and was able to ride out the rest of the clock and walk away with the one-goal win at Vonnie Gros Field.

West Chester will be back in action on Wednesday as it hosst Kutztown University at 4 p.m.
