West Chester Women Fall to Charleston In NCAA First Round

Box Score

ERIE, Pa.
- Making their first appearance in the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Tournament since 1983, West Chester University dropped a 5-0 decision to University of Charleston (WV) at the Pennbriar Athletic Club Monday afternoon.

West Chester (14-4) battled hard at all three doubles contests, but could not manage a point against Charleston (19-3). The Golden Eagles then picked up wins at fourth and first singles to clinch the match, before any other matches could be finished.

For the Golden Rams, the loss brings to a close arguably the most successful women's tennis season in program history and with it the end to a brilliant era of women's tennis put forth by this year's senior class. They will graduate as the winningest class in school history, becoming the first to reach 50 career wins while also authoring an unprecedented 21-match winning streak over the last four years.

Head coach Tina Tharp improves her women's overall record to 108-72 in leading her charges to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in her tenure. Senior Maddy Shaak (Myerstown, Pa./Eastern Lebanon County) was 15-4 in her senior season and authored an overall career record of 53-24. She played the majority of her career at second singles while teaming with fellow senior Claire Uhle (Blue Bell, Pa./Wisahickon) at first doubles. In just three seasons in the Purple & Gold, Uhle etched out an overall record of 55-19 at mainly first singles. Together, Shaak and Uhle were 59-12. Shaak, who spent all four years at West Chester University was 68-21 overall in doubles play.

Fellow senior, Abriana Nolan (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale) was 11-8 on the year and 40-35 overall in her four-year career with the Golden Rams. Steph Cifarelli (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) posted an overall career record of 24-15 at sixth singles for the Rams. She was 12-5 this spring.
