No. 16 West Chester Runs Past Georgian Court, 20-4

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Tara Morrissey (Downingtown, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) registered six points while teammates Tatum Altman (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick) and Trisha Baud (West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) each posted five points to lead No. 16 West Chester to a 20-4 victory over visiting Georgian Court in the season opener Saturday afternoon at Vonnie Gros Field.
 
West Chester (1-0) dominated from the outset, running out to a 13-1 lead by halftime. Sami Barnett (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) got the Golden Rams off to a quick start with a pair of goals on free positions within the first five minutes. The hosts had a 5-0 lead in the first 11 minutes, before Georgian Court called a timeout and stopped the rally with its only first-half marker.
 
Barnett finished with a hat trick on the day. Morrissey scored four times while Altman added a hat trick and a pair of assists. Baud came off the bench in the second half and registered five points (2 goals, 3 assists) in her first action in the purple & gold.
 
Eleven different players inked their name on the scoresheet for West Chester with seven players recording multiple-goal games.
 
Emily Schulze (Harleysville, Pa./North Penn) and Maggie Stella (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) each tallied a pair of goals from their starting positions. Alex Wendig (West Chester, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) got a pair of goals off the bench late in the game.
 
West Chester's constant pressure forced Georgian Court into 25 turnovers with 11 of those coming in the clearing game. The Lions were just 6-for-17 on clears. Additionally, West Chester held a decided 27-11 advantage on ground balls and 13-8 edge on draw controls.
 
Senior Sarah Gebre (Furlong, Pa./Central Bucks West) caused three turnovers and registered four ground balls. Barnett was credited with six draw controls.
 
West Chester will be back in action at home next Thursday for a 4 p.m. faceoff against Jefferson University.
