COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Strong performances on both the balance beam and the floor exercise propelled West Chester University's women's gymnastics squad to a second-place finish at Maryland on Sunday afternoon.
 
West Chester topped Division I foe University of Pennsylvania by the slimmest of margins, 190.65-190.55. Host Maryland won the quad meet with a 193.85 while SUNY Cortland finished fourth with a 183.45.
 
"I was certainly proud of the girls today, scoring over a 190 their first time out," head coach Barb Cordova said. "We definitely have some things to work on, but overall it was a nice effort today."
 
Yoli Nodarse (Pompton Plains, N.J.) tied for second on the beam with a score of 9.775. Teammate 
Sara Boyd (St. Petersburg, Fla.) tied for fourth with a 9.725. Freshman 
Ashley Duke (Fredericksburg, Va.) scored a 9.65 for a Top 10 finish on the beam. West Chester finished with a 48.2.
 
Fellow freshman 
Rose Fanara (Fredericksburg, Va.) placed sixth on the floor exercise with a 9.675 while both 
Jessica Meakim (Downingtown, Pa.) and 
Brashlyn Johnson (Aynor, S.C.) tied for ninth with a 9.65. West Chester scored a 48.15 as a team on the floor.
 
Johnson led all Golden Rams on the vault with a score of 9.55. Meanwhile Duke and 
Melanie Wojewoda (Amelia, Ohio) tied for seventh on the uneven bars with identical scores of 9.6.
 
West Chester returns to the gym next Sunday for its home opener in a dual meet against Ursinus at 1 p.m.
