Barnett And Stella Named Philly-SIDA Academic All-Area; Stella Performer of the Year

PHILADELPHIA – West Chester seniors  Maggie Stella (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) and Sami Barnett (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) were named Philadelphia Area Sports Information Directors Association (Philly-SIDA) academic all-area it was announced by that organization Tuesday afternoon.
 
Stella also walked home with the 2019 Philadelphia Inquirer Performer of the Year plaudits for the sport of women's lacrosse in a vote of SIDs from schools in the Philadelphia region. In order to be eligible for academic all-area honors, an athlete must be in at least his or her second year at the institution and hold a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better.
 
Stella, a two-time IWLCA first team all-region pick and the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) player of the year this past spring, collected her second player of the year nod this season. She finished her final campaign with 56 goals, 19 assists and 75 points while scooping up 93 draw controls.  She ranked tied for fourth in the PSAC in draw controls and tied for 36th in the nation in the same category. She leaves West Chester ranked second all-time in career draw controls (204). Her 111 and 93 draws in each of the past two seasons also ranks among the Top four in a single-season in school history.
 
Barnett, who was a first-team All-American in 2018, caps a marvelous four-year career in the Purple & Gold with yet another honor. The senior was a first team All-PSAC and first team All-ECAC pick and first team IWLCA All-Atlantic Region pick already this year. She is also up for All-America honors as well. That will be announced at a later date. Barnett led the team in scoring with 60 goals and 78 points. She also picked up 65 draw controls and another 28 ground balls.
 
The 12 members of the academic all-area women's lacrosse team includes student-athletes from 10 different institutions. West Chester (Stella, Sami Barnett) and Penn (Erin Barry, Gabby Rosenzweig) were the only schools with multiple selections, each garnering a pair of honors.
 
Filling out the All-Area team were selections from Swarthmore (Sadie Camilliere), Saint Joseph's (Bridget Cerciello), Temple (Maddie Gebert), Haverford (Allie Gibbons), Drexel (Karson Harris), Rowan (Liz Kramer), Cabrini (Avery Murphy), and Jefferson (Sarah von Lange).
