Carozza Repeats as National Champion in 200 Fly; Niness and Durkin All-Americans

INDIANAPOLIS, IND. Ann Carozza (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) repeated as national champion in the 200-yard butterfly to lead West Chester University on Day 4 of the 2023 NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships inside the Indiana Natatorium Friday night.
 
West Chester stands in fifth place with 192 points after four days. Nova Southeastern leads the field with 434.5 points while UIndy is second with 344. Drury is third with 263.5, and Colorado Mesa is fourth with 258. The Golden Rams swam past Lynn, who sits sixth in the standings with 160 points.
 
Carozza, who already owns the fastest 200 fly time in Division II, placed first for the second straight year, touching the wall in 1 minute, 57.73 seconds. It was her second individual national title and eighth All-America certificate in her five seasons at West Chester.
 
Mikayla Niness (Spring City, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) and Keeley Durkin (Brookhaven, Pa./Sun Valley) also picked up All-America citations in the 500 freestyle. Niness placed fourth in a time of 4:52.88 while Durkin was sixth in 4:53.94.
 
The Golden Rams' 200 free relay squad consisting of Niness, Isabella Kil (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro), Hemingway and Samantha Trumble (Dallastown, Pa./Dallastown) brought home an All-America plaudit with its eighth-place finish.
 
McKenzie Hemingway (Chestertown, Md./Queen Anne's County) was 13th in the 100 breaststroke. She touched in 1:03.42.
 
Sophia Gerhart (Spring Mills, Pa./Penn Valley Area) placed 26th in the 200 fly during the morning prelims. However, she did not earn another swim at night.
 
Saturday morning sees prelims in the 100 free, the 200 back, 200 breast preceed the finals in those same events at night, plus the 1650 free and the 400 free relay, which will conclude the championships.
