Nick Ward Leading Great Britain at World Baseball Classic

PHOENIX, Ariz. - Former West Chester University infielder, Nick Ward (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville), has spent much of the baseball spring training competing for Great Britain in the World Baseball Classic.

Ward is an infieder for Great Britain, which is 1-2 in Pool C play taking place at Chase Field in Phoenix, Ariz. Great Britain finishes up its Pool play Tuesday night against Mexico in a game that can be seen on FS1 at 10 p.m. Great Britain lost to Team USA, 6-2, on March 11, lost to Canada, 18-8, on March 12, and defeated Columbia, 7-5, last night, in its Pool round robin so far. Team USA leads Pool C with a 2-1 record while Canada, Columbia and Mexico are all 1-1.

At the end of the first round, the teams in each pool shall be ranked according to the percentages of games won. The two teams with the highest such percentages in each pool shall advance to the quarterfinal round. If at the end of pool play in round one of the tournament, teams within a pool are tied with an identical winning percentage, the tie shall be broken in the following order of priority:

  • The team that won the games between the teams tied shall be given the higher position. If three or more teams are tied and one of those teams won its games against all other teams it is tied with, then it will be placed in the higher spot. Similarly, if one of those tied teams lost its games against all other teams it is tied with, then it will be placed in the lowest spot.
  • The tied teams shall be ranked in the standings according to the lowest quotient of fewest runs allowed divided by the number of defensive outs recorded in the games in that round between the teams tied.
  • The tied teams shall be ranked in the standings according to the lowest quotient of fewest earned runs allowed divided by the number of defensive outs recorded in the games in that round between the teams tied.
  • The tied teams shall be ranked in the standings according to the highest batting average in games in that round between the teams tied.
  • Standings shall be determined by the drawing of lots, conducted by WBCI.
Through three games, Ward is hitting .333 (3-for-9) with four runs scored and one RBI. He has walked twice and struck out once. He has a .455 on-base percentage and a .788 OPS.

Upon conclusion of Great Britain's involvement in the World Baseball Classic, Ward will return to the Philadelphia Phillies spring training facility in Clearwater, Fla.
