WEST CHESTER, PA – Top-ranked West Chester University battles arch-rival East Stroudsburg University in the NCAA Division II Women's Lacrosse Atlantic Region final Sunday at 12 p.m. at Vonnie Gros Field.
Â
West Chester (20-0) equaled the school's single-season record for wins as a result of its 21-8 victory over Seton Hill in the region semifinals Friday. East Stroudsburg (14-5) downed Kutztown, 15-8, in the other semifinal to get into the region final.
Â
Sunday marks the fifth straight year that West Chester and East Stroudsburg meet in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament. East Stroudsburg is 3-1 in the previous four meetings, including 1-1 at Vonnie Gros Field. This spring is the fourth year that the NCAA Tournament has expanded to 16 teams, creating a regional tournament. All four years, that regional final has featured West Chester vs. East Stroudsburg.
Â
Last spring, up at East Stroudsburg, the host Warriors came away victorious, 13-12 in overtime, on their way to the national championship game. ESU has won the last two Atlantic Region titles. However, both finals were played on ESU's campus. West Chester won the 2019 crown and that was played at Vonnie Gros Field.
Â
During the regular season, West Chester defeated East Stroudsburg in both meetings. The Golden Rams took a 16-5 decision at Vonnie Gros Field in March, before claiming an 11-9 victory at Whitenight Field in East Stroudsburg. That two-goal differential is the closest game West Chester has played so far this year.
Â
Sunday's winner will be one of four participants in the national semifinals May 19-21 in Indianapolis, Ind., to determine the 2023 NCAA Division II National Champion.
