Last Time Out
West Chester picked up two crucial wins last weekend over Lock Haven (3-2) and Bloomsburg (3-0) to remain in the hunt for a PSAC Tournament appearance. After a lengthy five-set win over Lock Haven, which saw West Chester continually allow the Bald Eagles back into the match, West Chester made short work of Bloomsburg on Saturday, rolling to a 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-23) victory over the Huskies. Zoe Haines (York, Pa./York Suburban) led the match in kills with 12 while also pacing the Golden Rams in blocks as she played in role in four in the victory. Julia Kwitchoff (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Wheatfield) also tied for the match-lead in blocks with four and led the team in aces with three, while Lacie Brown (Cochranville, Pa./Avon Grove) led the team in assists (29) and digs (10).
Flock Talk
Haines passed Anna Richardson (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) as the team leader in kills with 236, while Richardson is second with 227. Brown is first on the team in assists (674) and assists (30) while also ranking second in digs (190), trailing only Sydney Heffner (Bath, Pa./Northampton), who leads the team with 311. Kwitchoff is first on the team in blocks with 61, while Haines is second with 50 of her own.
It’s Getting Late
With two victories over Lock Haven and Bloomsburg last weekend, West Chester kept its PSAC Tournament aspirations alive for another week. The team climbed into sixth and is just a match out of what could become a four-way tie for third with East Stroudsburg, Millersville, and Bloomsburg, who all enter the weekend at 5-5 in league play.
One Last Bus Trip
This weekend will be the Golden Rams' final road trip of the 2024 regular season. The team will conclude its regular season at home next weekend vs. Shepherd and Shippensburg.
Series History
West Chester heads into the weekend trailing ESU in the all-time series by a 46-39 margin after losing three straight and four of the last five against the Warriors. West Chester dominated the series for an almost 10-year stretch, winning 19 in a row from 2007 through November 2016 before falling to ESU in October 2017, as the series has since become much tighter.
Against Kutztown, West Chester holds a 31-24 lead in the all-time series and has won four in a row and eight of the last 10 dating back to 2018. Before this loss to Kutztown in October 2018, which came at Kutztown, West Chester had not lost to the Golden Bears since a five-set loss away from home in October 2012. West Chester has not lost to Kutztown in Hollinger Field House since November 2011, when that setback came as part of a three-game losing streak for the Golden Rams.
Scouting ESU
East Stroudsburg (15-7, 5-5) enters play looking to halt a two-game losing streak on Senior Night against West Chester on Friday. The Warriors were swept last weekend on the road, falling to Shepherd in West Virginia in five sets before dropping their matchup at Shippensburg on Saturday by a 3-0 final. These setbacks halted a modest two-match winning streak for ESU, which had seen the Warriors sweep Georgian Court and Kutztown on October 24 and 25.
At Shippensburg on Saturday afternoon, Anna Coulter led the team in kills (8), aces (1), and blocks (5), while Taylor Haan led in assists with 19 on a day that ESU struggled to get much going offensively, falling by a 25-17, 25-18, 25-17 final in Heiges Field House.
Coulter leads the team in kills (295) and blocks (102), while Kelly Crites is a close second with 166 kills of her own. Haan is first on the team in assists (742) and aces (45). Leonor Chambel leads the team in digs, with 315 entering the final two weeks of the regular season.
Scouting Kutztown
In the midst of a 10-game losing streak, the 2024 season has gotten long for the Kutztown University women’s volleyball team (1-23, 0-10) as the Golden Bears remain in search of their first conference win of the year heading into the final two weeks of the season. Last weekend, Kutztown visited Shippensburg and Shepherd, falling to the Raiders by a 3-1 final on Friday night and the Rams by a 3-0 final on Saturday evening.
At Shepherd last Saturday night, Kutztown fell by a 25-15, 25-19, 25-14 final despite an 11-kill effort by Sarah Hess, which led all players in the setback.
Hess leads the team in kills with 187 on the year and is first in blocks with 64. Bryanna Carter is second with 139 kills, while Emma Baldridge leads the team in assists with 291. Lexi McLanahan is first on the team in both aces (41) and digs (307).
