Road Warriors
After opening its season in Hollinger Field House as it has every year since 2014, when the squad opened its season with a 3-0 win over Notre Dame College (OH) to begin RAMFest, West Chester will be on the road for nearly a month, beginning with its visit to Goldey-Beacom tonight. West Chester will head back out on the road this weekend to visit with Dominican (N.Y.) on Friday at 6 p.m. before facing Chestnut Hill on Saturday at 12 p.m.
Not That Kind of History
West Chester will look to bounce back from a disappointing weekend in Hollinger, which included the team’s first season-opening loss since 2012.
Welcome to the Flock
West Chester got strong efforts from its newcomers this weekend, including first-year Anna Richardson (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna), who led the team in kills with 38 while recording five aces, 17 digs, and 4.0 blocks. Richardson registered a double-double in the Golden Rams Saturday morning victory over Jefferson, finishing with 10 kills (her second consecutive 10-kill match of the weekend) and 11 digs. Junior setter transfer Lacie Brown (Cochranville, Pa./Avon Grove) also turned in an excellent weekend as she made her Golden Ram debut, leading the team in assists with 62 while also ranking second in aces (5) and digs (27). Brown trailed only fellow setter Megan St. Jean (Eaton, Co./Eaton) in aces as she registered 10 to go along with her 53 assists and trailed Sydney Heffner (Bath, Pa./Northampton) in digs as the veteran libero, registered 53 on the weekend.
History vs Goldey-Beacom
West Chester holds a 17-0 lead in the series against Goldey-Beacom since 2006. West Chester has dropped only one set to the Lightning during this 17-match winning streak, which came during RAMFest 2019 when West Chester defeated Goldey-Beacom for the second time in as many days by a 3-1 final after dropping the opening set.
Scouting Goldey-Beacom
Like West Chester, Goldey-Beacom enters play on Tuesday night to avoid a losing streak and make its way back to .500 after going 1-2 during its opening weekend trip up North. The Lightning started their season with a visit to Connecticut, where they fell to Queens by a 3-1 final before bouncing back with a late-night victory over host Southern Connecticut State by a 3-1 final. On its way home from the Constitution State, Goldey-Beacom visited Mercy and fell to the Mavericks by a 3-0 final on Saturday afternoon. The Lightning enter Tuesday night hitting .145 as a team with 114 kills on 393 swings, led by Caitlyn Burch and Giuliana Jaku, who have 35 and 33 kills, respectively. Burch, a senior middle hitter from Mechanicsville, Maryland, also ranks second in aces (3) and leads the group in blocks (12). The Lightning turned to a first-year to help run their offense this year as Istanbul, Turkey native Ada Koksal leads the group in assists with 86, while fellow first-year Gaby Fernandez leads the team in digs with 55 after her first weekend of collegiate volleyball.
