BROOKVILLE, NY - West Chester University's women's rugby squad dropped its fall season opener, 41-20, against Long Island University Sunday afternoon.
Trailing 7-0, the Golden Rams' 15 looked sharp early.
Elly Gorham (Alexandria, Va./Hayfield Secondary) intercepted a pass and raced 70 meters for a try. Then, sophomore
Emma Davies (Kennett Square, Pa./Kennett) followed with the conversion to tie the game at 7-7. Davies added a pair of penalty kicks to put the visitors in front 13-7 with 15 minutes before halftime.
LIU rattled off 34 unanswered points to take control of the contest, while holding West Chester scoreless over a 51-minute span, that left the Sharks in command, 41-13 with five minutes to play.

Kristen Swavely (Reading, Pa./Exeter) ended the scoring drought with her first career try.
Keeley Fugazzi (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) scored her first career points converting Swavely's try in the closing minutes.
Davies finished the day with eight points.
West Chester heads to American International College (AIC) next Friday night for its National Intercollegiate Rugby Association (NIRA) opener in Springfield, Mass.
