WEST CHESTER, Pa.- After opening its season with a 3-1 series victory over the University of Charleston (W.V.) last weekend in Virginia, the West Chester University baseball team (3-1) has moved up one spot from ninth to eighth in the latest American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) poll released this afternoon.
Tampa (10-2) remains first in the poll followed by Angelo State (13-2), North Greenville (14-1), Central Missouri (6-2),and Texas-Tyler (13-2). Augustana (3-1) is sixth followed by Indianapolis (5-1), West Chester (3-1), Southern New Hampshire (4-1) and Florida Southern (11-2).
West Chester is one of three PSAC teams in the top-30 this week as Millersville (2-1) is 25
th, while Seton Hill (4-1) Is 29
th.
West Chester split its doubleheader on Saturday to open the season, capturing game one by a 12-2 final before dropping the nightcap by a 4-3 final, after allowing three runs in the first two innings of game two. On Sunday, West Chester exacted revenge for this loss and won the series in convincing fashion, defeating Charleston 9-2 and 10-2 to sweep the doubleheader. With that, West Chester outscored its foes 34-10 through the first four games of the season.
Casey Vaughan (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) and
Ben Bolhouse (Chadds Ford, Pa./Kennett) are first and second on the team in average after the first weekend, batting .417 and .400 on the year, while
Kyle Kearns (West Chester, Pa./Rustin), Julian Costa (Mantua, N.J./Clearview), and Kyle Lazer (Havertown, Pa./Msgr. Bonner & Prendie) all opened the season with victories on the mound.
West Chester will be back in action this weekend in Cary, North Carolina vs St. Thomas Aquinas, Wheeling, and Pace.
