Demesy Takes Fourth, Sets New Program and PSAC Record in 1000 Free on Day Two of NCAA DII Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, In. – Paul Demesy (Saint Ulrich, France) set a new program record in the 1000 freestyle to lead the West Chester University men's swimming squad on the second day of the NCAA Division II Men's Swimming and Diving Championships on Wednesday.

Demesy became a First Team All-American once again in the 1000 free, placing fourth, an improvement over his sixth-place finish a year ago, in 9 minutes and 1.47 seconds, which also serves as a new PSAC and program record. Before Demesy's record-breaking swim, current assistant coach Victor Polyakov held the record, setting it in 2014 with a time of 9:04.20

Demesy attributed his record-breaking performance to his consistent efforts at practice throughout the year, saying, "It all goes back to the work we've been putting in throughout the season. I did a lot of sprint work this year at practice, and with the 200 and 500 free, I think that really helped me hone my speed. I knew going in that it was going to be a fast race with how talented everyone here is, so I just wanted to make sure I stayed within myself and swam my race," said the Golden Rams newest All-American.

Demesy's swim also scored 15 points for West Chester in the team standings.

Kolos Nagy (Szazhalomatta, Hungary) was also in action on Wednesday morning in the prelims of the 200 Individual Medley, finishing 18th in that session in 1:48.03 to narrowly miss a spot in the finals on Wednesday evening.

Nagy will return to the pool tomorrow for the 400 IM prelims as he competes in the second heat. Demesy will have a well-deserved day off tomorrow before competing in the 500 free on Friday and 1650 free on Saturday to help wrap up the Championships.
