West Chester Men Win John Pidgeon Memorial

JOHN A. PIDGEON MEMORIAL MEET RESULTS

NEWVILLE, PA. - West Chester swimmers won five of the eights Saturday afternoon en route to a first-place finish at the John A. Pidgeon Memorial Invitational hosted by Indiana University of Pennsylvania inside Big Spring High School.

West Chester's depth shined on the men's side as the Golden Rams accrued 502 points to outdistance Bloomsburg, which put up 321. Kutztown was third with 196 points, IUP was fourth with 181 points while Pitt-Johnstown was fifth with 26.

The Golden Rams took the top two spots in both relays, winning the 400-yard medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay. That gave West Chester 164 of its team points in the invitational. The purple and gold also dominated the 500 free by claiming the top five spots while also taking the top three spots in the 200 butterfly.

Bartosz Brzozowski (Warsaw, Poland) led off the 400 medley relay that won. He also took first place in the 100 backstroke with a time of 51.79 seconds. He was the third swimmer in the pool for the second-place 400 free relay. Nathan Noel (Destrehan, LA Destrehan) won the 200 butterfly in 1 minute, 57.70 seconds. He led off the fourth-place 400 free relay squad.

Paul Demesy (Saint Ulrich, France) won the 500 free in a time of 4:40.89. Danny Dunigan (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) was second in 4:45.13 while Marti Rosell Diez (L'Albiol, Spain) was third in 4:45.17. Szymon Kapala (Olsztyn, Poland) was fourth and Jacob Texter (West Grove, PA Avon Grove) was fifth.

The Golden Rams took advantage of their chance on Saturday to see where they match up against other Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) teams, and they passed with flying colors.

"They are training at a high level right now," West Chester head coach Steve Mazurek said. "Today was an opportunity to get back into racing shape and to figure out where we are. We still have work to do. But, I feel good about this team. We will suit up and get after it against UPenn on Friday."

West Chester will return to Graham Natatorium next Friday evening for a 5 p.m. dual meet against Division I foe, University of Pennsylvania. That meet will serve as Senior Night for the Golden Rams' swimmers and divers.
