UMass Too Much For West Chester, 4-1

Box Score

WEST CHESTER, Pa.
- The Atlantic 10 leading scorer Katelyn Orlando scored twice as visiting Massachusetts erased an early one-goal deficit to down host West Chester, 4-1, Saturday afternoon at Vonnie Gros Field in a field hockey tilt.

Freshman Alyssa Gallen had given the Golden Rams (5-9, 0-3 Atlantic 10) a 1-0 lead 16 minutes into the contest when she knocked in a pass from Marisa Holzman. However, the Minutewomen (12-3, 4-0) responded with two goals before the half and tacked on two more afterward to walk away with the win.

Orlando tied things up when she deflected a pass from Erin Parker past WCU goalkeeper Joelle Zarefoss at the 21:50 mark. Cher King then put UMass on top for good when she hammered a shot past Zarefoss at the 32:54 mark.

Orlando started the scoring in the second half with her 11th tally of the season off an assist from Christine Rodgers. With her back to the Rams' keeper, Orlando received a pass from Rodgers, who was standing in the far corner, and wheeled around to tuck the shot past a charging Zarefoss.

West Chester missed an opportunity to tighten things up when a goal off a penalty corner was disallowed with nine minutes remaining that could have made it a 3-2 ballgame.

Unfortunately, UMass would capitalize on a corner of its own in the final two minutes to put the game out of reach. Katie Kelly tipped in a pass from King while standing on the far post during a scramble that followed the corner.

King posted one goal and one assist, along with Orlando's two goals, in the win.

Zarefoss made nine saves, and Desiree Walker was credited with a defensive stop. Alesha Widdell was called upon to make just one save on the afternoon. The Minutewomen outshot the Golden Rams, 22-5 and held a 9-6 advantage in penalty corners.\

West Chester continues A-10 play Friday when it travels to St. Louis for a 1 p.m. contest. The Rams return home next Sunday to host Richmond at noon.
