WEST CHESTER, Pa. - West Chester University opens its PSAC East schedule with rival Millersville Saturday night under the lights at Farrell Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. The Golden Rams are coming off a 48-20 defeat at the hands of Division I FCS member Delaware last weekend. Millersville is still in search of its first victory of the season for first-year head coach Greg Colby.
West Chester, the defending PSAC East champion, was picked to win the division again in a vote of the coaches in the preseason poll. Tonight mark’s the team’s first league test of the 2008 campaign and Millersville is hungry for an upset. The Golden Rams lead the overall series with the Marauders, 58-17, and bring a personal five-game winning streak in the series into tonight’s tilt.
Millersville is West Chester’s oldest rival in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. These two institutions have met 75 times, dating all the way back to 1921. The Golden Rams dominated the series early on, racking up a 41-game winning streak from 1922 to 1974. Ironically, 11 of Millersville’s 17 wins in the series have come at West Chester.
The Golden Rams dropped out of the AFCA coaches’ poll this week for the first time since 2006, ending an 18-week run in the national poll. West Chester had spent the previous two weeks at No. 23. However, its 48-20 loss at the hands of Delaware, ranked No. 6 in Division I FCS, was enough to knock the Rams out of the poll.
West Chester head coach Bill Zwaan will receive a game ball commemorating his 100th career win, which came over Lock Haven on Sept. 6, in a brief pregame ceremony. The 12-year mentor is one of the country’s most successful DII head coaches.
