Newark, Del. – Keegan Hackman converted two penalty kicks as Delaware clipped West Chester as defense was the key to success in women’s rugby action Saturday afternoon.
West Chester (1-2) suffered through an ice-cold offensive day after lighting up the scoreboard with 79 points against American University just one week ago. Delaware (2-0) used rock-solid defense and strategy to remain unbeaten so far this season.
The Golden Rams took the lead in the 15th minute on the back of Drew Groswith, who beat the defense and found pay dirt, putting West Chester up 5-0 after the missed conversion.
Hackman answered for the Blue Hens, however, converting two penalty kicks in the 18th and 25th minutes to put the Blue Hens up 6-5.
The Blue Hens’ defense held the lead with stout tackling and ball control.
The Golden Rams welcome the University of Maryland to town next Saturday at 1 p.m.
