Oswald Leads No. 9 West Chester Past Shippensburg, 3-0

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa.
– Sarah Oswald scored two goals in the second half to lead ninth-ranked West Chester University to a 3-0 PSAC East women’s soccer victory on the road over host Shippensburg on a brisk Tuesday evening.

West Chester (10-1-1, 8-1 PSAC East) tightened its stranglehold on the rest of the division while running its winning streak to four straight and its unbeaten string to 10. Shippensburg dropped to 5-5-2 overall and 2-3-2 in the conference. The Golden Rams also swept the season series with the Raiders.

Oswald potted her fifth goal of the year in the 55th minute to put the Rams on top, 1-0. In the final two minutes of the game, Oswald and Melissa McKeary scored 43 seconds apart to ice the tilt. McKeary also assisted on Oswald’s second tally of the game.

Oswald, who ranks second in the NCAA in assists and assists per game, improved her team-best point total to 23 on the year. She now has six goals and 11 assists.

Freshman goalkeeper Lyndsie Bernardini increased her shutout string to 593 consecutive minutes. She made four saves going the distance in goal for her eighth shutout of the year. Bernardini, fifth in the nation with a 0.18 goals-against average, lowered that mark even more Tuesday.

West Chester outshot Shippensburg, 21-10, and held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks. Raiders’ goalkeeper Beth Long stopped seven shots in 90 minutes of action.

The Golden Rams are back in action on Saturday with a 1 p.m. contest against PSAC West foe Gannon in Erie, Pa.
