Women's Rugby Roughs Up American, 79-5

WEST CHESTER, Pa. - Red-shirt freshman Cheryl Johnson tied three school records as West Chester University rolled to a 79-5 victory over visiting American University Saturday afternoon on the rugby pitch.

West Chester (1-1) scored 14 trys and converted seven of those scores while posting the second-most points in a game in school history en route to the win over American (0-2). On the day, West Chester set or tied three team records and five individual marks in the romp.

Johnson scored four trys and posted 20 points, including three trys and 15 points in the first half as West Chester ran out to a 50-5 advantage by the break. Her four trys overall, coupled with her three trys and 15 points in the first half all tied school marks. Her 20 points on the day was the second-best effort in school history. 

Megan Lamm, who finished with 17 points, set a school record by converting six tries on the day, including a record-tying feat of five conversions in the first half. She also added a try in the second half to her scorecard. Anna McGlade registered three trys of her own and finished with 15 points for the Golden Rams. 

Michelle Gerlach, Devon Tucker and Kate Rada also posted trys in the first half. Laura Meier scored a try and then converted it in the second half. Freshman Priscilla Torres also scored her first career try to close out the scoring in the 75th minute.

American's lone try came in the 17th minute and made the score 14-5 after the missed conversion. West Chester than rolled up 65 unanswered points the rest of the way on the strength of nine trys in the first half.
