WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Janelle Garber scored a team-high 22 points to lead West Chester University to a 63-61 victory over visiting Shippensburg in a PSAC East women’s basketball contest Wednesday evening at Hollinger Field House.
Garber’s layup with 4:46 left in the game put her over 1,000 career points. She becomes the 14th female player in school history to hit the impressive milestone.
West Chester (14-6, 4-3 PSAC East) stormed back from an 11-point deficit in the second half with a 19-6 run. Sophomore Jillian Keefer netted all 10 of her points in the game during the stretch, including a perfect 5-for-5 from the line. Her pair of foul shots with 7:25 showing on the game clock capped the comeback.
Shippensburg (10-13, 3-4 PSAC East) re-took the lead with one minute to play, before the Golden Rams put the game out of reach by scoring six straight points. A 3-pointer by the Raiders at the buzzer closed the final deficit to two.
West Chester quickly jumped out to a seven-point lead (9-2) in the first four minutes of play. However, the momentum shifted Shippensburg’s way as the Raiders went on a 9-2 run of its own over three minutes of play to push the visitor’s lead into double digits (25-15). Lauren Beckley sparked the Raiders with six points during that stretch.
West Chester responded in the second half by going on an 8-2 run in the first nine minutes of play to cut the lead to 40-38. The Golden Rams were able to get to the line in the second half by shooting 76.5 percent (13-for-17), and overall were 65.2 percent (15-for-23).
Megan Stewart became the seventh player in school history to dish out 300 assists. She finished with nine helpers on the night to go along with nine points and four steals. Dominique Adams added 11 points and was 5-for-7 from the field.
Lauren, Beckley led the Raiders with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Kasey Gardner chipped in with 20 points and was 6-for-7 from the foul line.
The Golden Rams are back in action when they host Millersville at 1 p.m. on Saturday. It is Hall of Fame weekend at Hollinger Field House.
