CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - West Chester scored a pair of trys in the second half during its comeback bid, but it was not enough against Virginia in the first round of the Mid-Atlantic Rugby Football Union (MARFU) playoffs on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in Virginia.
With the loss, West Chester (5-5) does not qualify for the USA Rugby national tournament next month. it will be the first time since the program went varsity six years ago that the Golden Rams will be left out of nationals. Virginia, which clinched a top four finish in the MARFU with the win, advances to nationals and will play Florida in the first round.
Brittany Miller and Cheryl Johnson scored trys eight minutes apart in the second half to pull West Chester to within nine (22-13). However, the Cavaliers iced the contest four mintues later witn Sharlyn Carter scored her third try of the afternoon to make it 27-13.
Megan Lamm converted a penalty kick in the first half as West Chester trailed 12-3 at the break.
"He has some better ball control in the second half," West Chester head coach Tony DeRemer said. "We just didn't have any possessions in the first half and that really put us in a hole at half."
