FROSTBURG, Md.- The West Chester University women's rugby team returned to action on Sunday for the Golden Rams final Tournament of the regular season as the team went to Maryland for the Frostburg 7s Tournament ahead of the Collegiate Rugby Championships next weekend. West Chester entered one team in the Tournament on Sunday and went 2-1 with a win over Mount St. Mary's in the opener and a hard-fought loss to Navy before ending the day with a win over Frostburg State.
Christelle Adikpeto (Abomey Calavi, Benin/Moon Area) got the scoring started for West Chester before
Sofia Lasonio (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) got West Chester out in front by a 12-7 margin heading into the halftime break.
Laura Smego (Greenwich, Ct./Greenwich) added a try of her own late in the second half to secure a 19-14 win for the Golden Rams.
Adikpeto and
Alyssa Miller (Philadelphia, Pa./Girard Academic Music Program) scored early trys against Navy and
Emma Davies (Kennett Square, Pa./Kennett) tallied two of her five conversions on the day but Navy roared back in the second half and earned a 22-14 comeback victory over the Golden Rams.
In the final game of the afternoon, Davies and
Bridget Kowalski (Chester Springs, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) got the scoring started but Frostburg State answered back and was hopeful to steal a victory over the visiting Golden Rams. Lasonio scored a late try to thwart the comeback bid and Davies made the conversion as West Chester held on for a 17-12 victory.
West Chester will head to the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Maryland, next week for the Collegiate Rugby Championships and will open its weekend against fifth-seeded Wheeling on Saturday morning, beginning at 9:20 a.m. as the second game of the day in the stadium. With a win over Wheeling, West Chester would face the winner of Brown/UConn in the Cup quarterfinal at 3:20 on Saturday afternoon, playing for a spot in the Semifinals on Sunday at 11:20 a.m. Additional information on the Championships is available
