SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Sixth-ranked West Chester University scored nine unanswered goals in the second half, limiting host Shippensburg University to just five shots on goal in the final 30 minutes en route to a come-from-behind 11-7 victory in a PSAC East women’s lacrosse match at Robb Sports Complex Monday afternoon.
West Chester (13-0, 7-0) trailed 5-2 at halftime, but awakened offensively, firing off 21 shots in the second half while smothering Shippensburg (7-5, 4-3) with its stifling defense.
The Golden Rams scored the game’s first two goals before the Raiders went on a 5-0 run to close out the first half and take a three-goal lead into the break. Shippensburg controlled the tempo of the game by winning seven of eight draw controls.
Nicole Haines sparked the second half surge, scoring four of the nine tallies that put West Chester back in control of the lacrosse game. Claire Grimwood (3 goals) netted a pair in the run while Erin Oczkowski (3 goals) also posted a pair of goals.
Mackenzie O’Keefe (8-0) made seven saves in the win.
Shippensburg picked up a pair of goals from Rachael Murray in the game’s final five minutes, but it was too late for a Raiders comeback.
Gabrielle Stitz had West Chester’s only other goal on the afternoon.
West Chester hosts Bloomsburg on Thursday at Vonnie Gros Field at 4 p.m. in the team’s final regular-season home game of 2010. A win over the Huskies would clinch the PSAC Eastern Division crown, assuring the Rams of hosting a PSAC Quarterfinal round match with the opportunity to host the league’s semifinals and finals.
