WEST CHESTER, Pa. – University of the Sciences' Kaitlyn Schmid nailed a pair of free throws with 2.9 seconds left to lift the visiting Devils to a 79-76 victory over host West Chester in the final game of the 28th Annual Carol Eckman Classic inside Hollinger Field House Saturday night.
West Chester (1-2) saw its 13-game winning streak in the Carol Eckman Classic dating back to 2006 come to a close with the loss. University of the Sciences (4-1) finished the tournament 1-1.
The Golden Rams had opened up an 11-point advantage shortly after halftime, just to watch the Devils come from behind for the win thanks to the efforts from first team All-CACC forward, Brianne Traub. She posted 19 of her team-best 25 points in the second half. West Chester did not let her into the scorebook until 1:30 remained in the first half.
Traub's 3-pointer with 10:45 left cut the hosts' lead to 58-57. USciences took its first lead since early in the first half with nine minutes left at 61-60. The Devils extended that lead to a game-high five points on a pair of 3-pointers from Jessica Sylvester with 6:50 remaining.
A 3-pointer from Jasmen Clark tied the score at 69-all with four minutes left. Sicinski followed up with a 3-ball of her own with just under three minutes to go that put West Chester back in front, 72-69. Keisha Steele-Hook then hit a layup with 1:26 left to open up a five-point lead with just over one minute to play. Hook laid in another on the fast break with 55 seconds left, and the Golden Rams were able to take a six-point lead with 33 seconds to go.
The Devils made one final run, cutting the lead to 76-75. Clark fouled Kaitlyn Schmid with 2.9 seconds left and USciences in the double bonus.
West Chester will be back in action on Wednesday when the Golden Rams open PSAC play hosting cross-county rival Cheyney at 7:30 p.m.
